Henry Hamlet's Heart
Rhiannon Wilde
Rhiannon Wilde has been telling stories for as long as she can remember---working as a journalist, a terrible barista, and a high-school English teacher in Brisbane, Australia. Rhiannon’s particular interests are caffeine, characters both real and imaginary, and the power of well-strung words to challenge and change us. Her second-person short story inspired by urban Brisbane, You Deserve Nothing, was longlisted for the Queensland Young Writer’s Award in 2014. Henry Hamlet’s Heart is her first novel, and won it the Queensland Literary Awards Glendower Award for an Emerging Queensland Writer in 2019.

Henry Hamlet’s Heart?! What about my heart?! This book filled it to the brim, broke it and then pieced it back together again. I found myself smiling so hard my cheeks hurt, crying like a baby, giggling like a teenager and cheering like a lunatic. It’s charming, sweet, nostalgic and utterly consuming. The exact book I wish I’d had when I was young. What a beautiful read.

Henry Hamlet wholly and truly has my heart. This book is an absolutely perfect laugh-out-loud, cry-in-bed, best-friends-to-lovers queer romance that you absolutely need to pick up. Rhiannon Wilde's debut is stunning and I can't wait to share it with everyone I know.

This incredible debut brought music to my brain, sunlight to my vision, and such deep, vibrant, and yearning love to my heart. A simple kissing dare between Henry and his best friend Len opens up feelings of wanting and belonging that neither had realized until that night. With senior year wrapping up, so much is changing already between family and friends – what does this mean for their friendship? Henry Hamlet's Heart is a gorgeous coming of age worthy of being ranked with Aristotle & Dante and Love, Simon.

This is the best friends-to-lovers romance that my cold cynical heart really needed. Henry and his first love feelings are cuteness overload. Full of humor, sincerity, and excellent musical references, this is one of my new favorite coming of age stories.

There aren't many books you absolutely fall in love with from the moment you pick up, and stay so until you finish it (later on that day because you could not put it down), but such is Henry Hamlet's Heart. The eponymous loveable nerd is fine with his place in social circles (which is to say barely in them, minus a few longtime friends), at school (not much better beyond debate and top of his class in English) and home (where he's somewhat the most anchored, even with his loving parents, Gran, and younger brother). He's pretty much resigned to his wit and barbs vs. finding love, unlike his best friend who excels at all with utter ease. When Ham suddenly discovers his own feelings, it's all he can do not to let his heart completely overrun his life. A genuinely delightful read that you'll want to share with all your friends and loved ones.
