America the Beautiful
Katharine Lee Bates, author
Katharine Lee Bates was born in 1859, when the United States had only been an independent country for 83 years. She taught English literature at Wellesley College, published many volumes of poetry and scholarly works, and founded the New England Poetry Club. Her most famous work, "America the Beautiful," was written in 1893 while she was delivering a summer lecture series at Colorado College. Katharine passed away in 1929.
