Children's Literature
Leo is an adorable young preschooler who experiences an enjoyable hiking adventure with his father. As the story begins the two are indoors gathering materials they will need for their adventure. As they proceed with their hike through the remaining pages there are beautiful nature scenes. The illustrations are bright, realistic, and perfectly suited for young children. It is easy to identify Leo and his father’s feelings from the facial expressions that are illustrated throughout their hike. These feelings include; excitement, happiness, awe, pleasure, curiosity, and tiredness. Throughout this eighteen page board book the author has written descriptive sentences to describe the things Leo and his father see, touch, hear, and taste. This story could be beneficial for children up to four- years- old. It is suitable for reading during story time at the library, in a preschool classroom, or for parents to read to their young children at home. It provides an excellent introduction to the exploration of the five senses in a natural setting. It could be used to extend children’s vocabulary and their understanding of size and speed. It could also be used as a talking point for how the characters feel as they enjoy a hike and expand children’s curiosity about their natural environment.
