Like many of us, young children often give up when trying to do something new or challenging. Lamb and chick are two friends who want to go out and play when the sun comes out after a rainstorm. Lamb struggles putting on his boots. Chick encourages Lamb to “keep trying.” Each character faces obstacles and overcomes them through perseverance. Lamb and chick are cute characters. VERDICT Though a bit message driven this title this title will serve as a useful read for adults helping children learn how to overcome challenges.
Children's Literature
A stormy day turns sunny, and Lamb and Chick can finally go out to play. Lamb cannot get his rain boots on, but Chick continues to encourage him to keep trying. Lamb successfully gets his boots on and goes outside to play in the puddles left by the storm. Chick is scared of the big puddle and thinks he cannot get over or around it. After encouragement from Lamb, Chick hops on rocks through the puddle and joins Lamb in playing with a ball. A wonderful message of perseverance is conveyed in this cute book. Repeat phrasing and repeat encouragement of the message to keep trying is fantastic and helps toddlers realize that even if they don’t succeed the first time if they keep trying they can accomplish the task at hand. Celebration and praise throughout this book boost confidence in the young reader, instilling the knowledge that they will eventually succeed.
