Science & Nature
Pallotta has tackled everything from vegetables, yucky reptiles, icky bugs, spices, flowers, and most recently, freshwater creatures. Combining a few easy to understand facts about each particular fish—"E is for Electric Eel. . . The electricity in their bodies is two hundred adn fifty thousand times stronger than the electricity in humans. They could light up a light bulb."—with colorful illustrations from various illustrators, he features both the well-known and the arcane, occasionally straining fro a representative for each letter, but generally offering consistent sets of twenty-six unusual creatures for your child's enjoyment.
School Library Journal
An inviting look at freshwater biology. In this alphabetically arranged overview, Pallotta surprisingly includes the Snow Monkey, who stays warm by soaking in hot springs, and Nessie, the legendary Loch Ness monster, along with familiar and lesser-known freshwater fish and crustaceans. Biedrzycki's beautiful naturalistic illustrations show each creature in its native habitat. A brief, two or three sentence description for each entry mentions its unique characteristics and explains how it got its name. A serviceable addition that should stimulate children to explore further.
